Ethiopia Limu
£16.75
One of our favourite coffees here at Merriness Coffee. This coffee highlights to us how delicious Ethiopian coffee is. It is wild, winey and yet full bodied. It is similar to our Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee but not as floral.
Our Limu is grown about 1600 masl in the Oromia region of south west Ethiopia and is a mix of coffees beans from just six farms of the Eastern African Heirloom varieties.
Fruity, winey and sweet.
Ethiopia – Wild, Winey, and Wonderfully Balanced
At Merriness Coffee, Ethiopia holds a special place in our hearts. Known as the birthplace of coffee, the country is home to some of the most diverse and distinctive coffee profiles in the world. This particular Ethiopian coffee is one of our favourites—a vibrant, wild, winey, and full-bodied offering that captures everything we love about the region’s unique flavour spectrum.
While it shares some similarities with our Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee, this coffee has its own personality. It is less floral than Yirgacheffe, leaning instead into a fruit-driven, wine-like complexity, making it a perfect choice for those who want the character of Ethiopian coffee with a richer body and a touch more depth.
From the Oromia Region
Our Ethiopian coffee comes from Limu, a well-regarded sub-region within Oromia, located in the southwest of the country. Oromia is a vast and diverse coffee-producing area, but Limu stands out for its ideal growing conditions and consistent quality.
Grown at an altitude of around 1,600 meters above sea level (masl), the coffee benefits from cooler temperatures that slow cherry maturation. This slower ripening process allows complex sugars and flavour compounds to develop fully, resulting in a cup that is both vibrant and balanced.
Six Farms, One Exceptional Coffee
This Limu coffee is a carefully curated mix from just six farms, all cultivating Eastern African Heirloom varieties. These heirloom cultivars are native to Ethiopia and are prized for their complexity, floral aromas, and bright fruit characteristics. No two heirloom plants are exactly the same, which means every harvest is rich with nuance and layered with flavour possibilities.
By combining the output of six farms, we’re able to create a coffee that’s both consistent and multifaceted—showcasing the full potential of the Limu terroir.
Flavour Profile
In the cup, this Ethiopian coffee is fruity, winey, and sweet, with a richness that makes it stand apart from lighter-bodied Ethiopian offerings. The winey quality brings to mind the depth of a fine red wine—smooth, slightly tangy, and layered—while the sweetness rounds out the profile, giving it an approachable and comforting character.
The body is fuller than you might expect from an Ethiopian coffee, offering a satisfying weight on the palate that pairs beautifully with its lively fruit notes. This combination of body, fruitiness, and wine-like complexity makes it an incredibly versatile coffee for different brewing styles.
Why It’s Different from Yirgacheffe
While Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffees are famous for their bright florals and tea-like delicacy, Limu takes a different approach. It is less about florals and more about depth, fruit, and richness. If Yirgacheffe is like a fragrant herbal tea, Limu is like a bold glass of wine—vibrant and expressive, yet grounded in its body and structure.
Brewing Recommendations
-
Pour-over (V60 / Kalita Wave) – Highlights the winey acidity and clean fruit finish.
-
French Press – Enhances the body, producing a rich and comforting cup.
-
Espresso – Creates a sweet, syrupy shot with a lively fruit kick.
This coffee also performs well in AeroPress and cold brew, where its sweetness and body shine through without overwhelming the palate.
Roasting for Balance and Sweetness
We roast this Ethiopian coffee to a light-medium level, carefully chosen to showcase its vibrant fruit notes while preserving its smooth, full body. This roast profile also ensures the winey qualities are present but never overpowering, letting the natural sweetness take centre stage.
Why We Love Ethiopia
Ethiopia is the origin of Arabica coffee, and it remains the gold standard for complexity and diversity in flavour. Every region—from Sidamo to Limu—offers something unique, shaped by altitude, soil, and local varieties. This Limu coffee is a shining example of why Ethiopian coffee is so loved: it’s rich, vibrant, and deeply satisfying, offering a drinking experience that feels both exotic and familiar.
At Merriness Coffee, we are proud to share this exceptional coffee from Ethiopia’s Oromia region. Fruity, winey, sweet, and full-bodied—it’s a cup that invites you to slow down, savour, and truly appreciate the incredible diversity that Ethiopia brings to the coffee world.
