Guatemala – Volcanic Valleys, Rich Flavour

Guatemala has been producing coffee since the 1850s, and today it stands as one of the top coffee producers in Central America. Known for its dramatic landscapes, rich volcanic soils, and diverse microclimates, Guatemala consistently delivers coffees that are celebrated for their elegance, balance, and complexity. At Merriness Coffee, Guatemalan coffee holds a special place in our hearts—it’s one of our absolute favourites for its distinctive character and consistently high quality.

From the Volcanic Valleys of Antigua

Our Guatemalan coffee beans come from plantations nestled in the lush volcanic valleys surrounding Antigua, one of the country’s most famous coffee-growing regions. Here, the coffee plants grow under the watchful gaze of three majestic volcanoes—Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. These natural giants not only shape the landscape but also enrich the soil with minerals, creating the perfect environment for producing exceptional coffee.

The plantations sit at an altitude of 1,650 meters, where cooler temperatures slow the ripening of the coffee cherries. This longer maturation period allows the beans to develop deep sweetness and complex flavours. The combination of high elevation, volcanic soil, and consistent climate results in coffees with remarkable clarity, sweetness, and body.

Varieties with Tradition and Quality

The coffee from these plantations comes from three classic Arabica varieties:

  • Caturra – Known for its bright acidity and sweetness, with a clean, crisp profile.

  • Bourbon – Valued for its smooth body and rich chocolate undertones.

  • Typica – One of the oldest cultivated varieties, offering balanced flavour and gentle sweetness.

Together, these varieties create a harmonious cup that reflects the best of Guatemalan terroir.

Flavour Profile

Brewed, this Guatemalan coffee is chocolatey and sweet with a beautiful body that feels silky on the palate. The aroma carries notes of blackberries, hinting at the subtle fruitiness within the cup. The chocolate base is rich yet refined, balanced by a sweetness that lingers pleasantly after each sip.

This balance makes it versatile—delicious as a black coffee for those who appreciate its clarity and depth, but also rich enough to shine when paired with milk.

Roasting for Sweetness and Balance

We roast our Guatemalan coffee to a medium level, which brings out its natural sweetness while preserving the delicate fruit and floral nuances. This roast profile allows the chocolate notes to deepen and the blackberry aroma to come through without overpowering the cup.

The result is a coffee that feels indulgent yet balanced—perfect for both everyday drinking and special moments.

Brewing Recommendations

  • Pour-over (V60 / Chemex) – Highlights the clarity and blackberry aromatics.

  • Espresso – Produces a rich, syrupy shot with deep chocolate and sweet berry notes.

  • French Press – Delivers a full-bodied, comforting cup with a velvety texture.

This coffee also works beautifully for cold brew, where its sweetness and smoothness shine without any harshness.
