Rwanda might be small but the coffee that comes out of this African country can sometimes be nothing but absolutely divine. As Rwanda has no coastline it can be expensive to export the coffee. There are some 400,000 small-scale growers and all coffee is Arabica.

Our coffee, which is grown at 1,400 – 1,900 meters, is from the varieties Bourbon and Typica and is a fully washed mix of coffees from 40 washing stations and 35,000 farmers in Rwanda. The coffee is hulled, graded and hand sorted at the Rwanda Trading Company in Kigali. This is a fruity and well balanced sweet coffee with beautiful hints of cranberries. We roast our Rwanda coffee beans to a light to medium level.

Rwanda – Small Country, Big Coffee Flavour

Rwanda may be small in size, but when it comes to coffee, it delivers flavours and quality that rival the best in the world. Known for its rolling green hills, fertile volcanic soil, and ideal climate, this landlocked African country produces coffee with elegance, complexity, and natural sweetness. Despite the challenges of having no coastline—which can make exporting more costly—Rwanda’s coffee industry thrives thanks to the dedication of its farmers and the country’s long-standing commitment to quality.

Coffee plays a vital role in Rwanda’s economy and culture, with around 400,000 small-scale growers cultivating 100% Arabica coffee. This dedication to premium-grade beans ensures that Rwanda’s reputation in the specialty coffee world continues to grow year after year.

From High-Altitude Farms to the Cup

Our Rwanda coffee is grown at elevations of 1,400 to 1,900 meters above sea level, where cooler temperatures slow the ripening of the cherries. This extended maturation allows the beans to develop concentrated sugars and intricate flavour profiles. The coffee comes from the Bourbon and Typica varieties—two of the most respected Arabica cultivars, both known for their sweetness, balance, and aromatic complexity.

What makes this particular Rwanda coffee unique is that it is a fully washed mix sourced from 40 washing stations and 35,000 farmers across the country. This diversity of origins adds depth and complexity, creating a cup that showcases the very best of Rwanda’s coffee-growing regions.

Meticulous Processing

After harvest, the coffee cherries are transported to the Rwanda Trading Company in Kigali, where they are hulled, graded, and hand-sorted to remove any imperfections. The fully washed process—involving careful fermentation to remove the mucilage, followed by thorough washing and sun-drying—enhances the coffee’s clarity and brings out its bright, fruit-forward profile.

The result is a clean, vibrant cup that allows the natural character of Rwandan coffee to shine.

Flavour Profile

In the cup, this Rwanda coffee is fruity, sweet, and beautifully balanced. The standout flavour note is cranberry, delivering a lively, tangy brightness that complements the coffee’s smooth body. This fruitiness is supported by a natural sweetness, making it approachable yet complex.

The body is medium and silky, while the acidity is vibrant but never overpowering. The overall impression is one of refinement—a coffee that invites you to savour each sip.

Roasted for Sweetness and Clarity

We roast our Rwanda coffee to a light-to-medium level, a profile chosen specifically to highlight its natural sweetness and preserve its delicate fruit notes. This roast allows the cranberry brightness to shine while keeping the cup smooth and clean.

Too dark a roast would mute these subtleties, while too light could leave the coffee tasting underdeveloped. Our roasting approach strikes the perfect balance, ensuring a cup that is both lively and refined.

Brewing Recommendations

  • Pour-over (V60 / Chemex) – Showcases the cranberry brightness and crisp finish.

  • Aeropress – Brings out more body while keeping the fruity notes intact.

  • Espresso – Creates a vibrant, tangy shot with a sweet aftertaste.

Whether enjoyed black for its complexity or with a small amount of milk to soften the acidity, this Rwanda coffee offers a truly memorable experience.
